1.The Essence of Signal Amplification: Turning Small Energy into Big Energy
The job of an RF PA is simple: take a weak modulated RF signal and amplify it to a sufficiently high power level so that it can be radiated as electromagnetic waves through an antenna. Without a PA, a signal might travel only a few meters; with a PA, it can cover kilometers or even farther. In energy terms, the PA transfers DC power from the supply to the RF signal while preserving the original information.
2. Three Numbers Determine PA Performance
Three key parameters define a PA’s performance: gain, output power, and efficiency.
·Gain (dB): the ratio of output power to input power, representing amplification capability.
· Output Power (dBm): the maximum RF power a PA can stably deliver to the load (e.g., an antenna).
·Efficiency (%): the ratio of output RF power to consumed DC power. Higher efficiency means less heat and longer battery life.
These three parameters trade off against each other – high power often reduces efficiency, high gain may worsen linearity. Engineers must make precise trade-offs.
